We were excited and honored to host the inspiring young ladies from Step Up Women’s Network – a nonprofit membership organization igniting women & girls to fulfill their potential. It was a great day filled with fun, inspiration, brainstorming and a little Dogeared history.

Ashley, Director of Marketing, leads the girls in a brainstorming activity. They are asked to create their own Make A Wish concept cards using charms for inspiration. They came up with some great ideas! Pulling from their personal experiences, their background and education. Some of the girls quoted lines from their favorite books and others shared meaningful mantras.

Dogeared Co-Founder Merlin and Ashley, our Director of Marketing, flew to Colorado this week for the B Corporation #BTheChange retreat. Upon arriving, they headed out in search of mud and were quickly able to find some families in need that were affected by the Boulder floods.

46 Mommas

46-mommas

Dogeared is so touched to have been a part of the third annual 46 Mommas: Shave for the Brave event raising funds for pediatric cancer research. This group of incredibly inspiring women and their families represent the reality that on average 46 families each weekday receive the news that their child has cancer. The 46 Mommas team is on a mission to raise awareness and funds for life-saving childhood cancer research. With the success of their most recent event, the team has surpassed their million dollar goal and have raised over $215,000 in 2013!

Meet honorary momma, Crystal. She shaved in honor of her brother, Cole, who passed away from a brain tumor. She is 18 and off to college in the fall. Dogeared was more than honored to give Sparkle Heart Necklaces to these brave women, helping bring out the beauty of their new look. We are so inspired by their courage and their goal to find a cure for pediatric cancer.

B Corp Love

Dogeared loves being a B-Corp! We’re held accountable to being good corporate citizens and that means we get fun visits from our friends at B Lab to see how we’re holding up our end of the bargain. B Lab team members, Jessica and Victoria, stopped by our office last week to check things out. They got a first hand look at what we do for our teams, the planet and our communities. We passed! And Jessica and Victoria took advantage of making their own wish before leaving..a Dogeared tradition! Learn more about B Lab and B-Corps and what we’re all about at http://www.bcorporation.net

700 Strong

Putting positive energy out there is the ultimate investment into a better world. Our Dogeared staff and community has long been involved in volunteering and giving back to causes that are near and dear to us and genuinely help others. Today, we are celebrating the success and accomplishments as a team by reaching over 700 hours of community and volunteering services since January! To date, the team has reached 744 hours through our involvement in opportunities including Heal the Bay, Locks of Love, Step Up Women’s Network, the American Cancer Society, Baby 2 Baby and the Do Good Bus.

Each event allows us to be a part of something greater. Our events are accessible and exciting, encouraging our entire team team to get involved and give back! Volunteering opportunities are chosen by our amazing “Karma in Action” team. The Karma in Action group meets once a month to determine events and opportunities for the company to be involved in and how to get employees to participate. The spirit of karma resonates through the program reminding staffers that “we are all connected.”

Since January, our Dogeared team has participated in team outings as well as individuals volunteering on their own time by assisting therapeutic riders at the Shadow Hills Riding Club raising funds for the Children’s Hospital on a monthly basis or mentoring and teaching at educational institutions.

Our program and Karma in Action team continue to inspire and encourage us to involve ourselves in causes that help those in need. We believe that everyone can be the change and help us create a better world!

B Corp Riders

As a certified B-Corp, Dogeared is always keeping a pulse on really cool ways to serve our local communities and make a difference. We are believers of a healthy and sustainable future, not just for business, but for our planet. So it was no surprise when our co-founder and avid road cyclist, Merlin, jumped on the opportunity to support the Climate Ride. This 6-day, 327 mile journey is an amazing movement that encourages a healthy lifestyle and fitness while promoting a movement towards a more eco-friendly environment for the future. Now that is something we can get on board with!!

Each cyclist raises funds months prior to the event to help fund the organization’s movements towards sustainable and clean energy. Merlin ended up raising over $4,500 this year! Over $450,000 was raised for Climate Ride and its beneficiaries on this particular ride. Funds support sustainable endeavors that range from protected bike lanes to environmentally-friendly legislation, from saving our forests to furthering the cause of socially responsible business via B Lab and others.

Fellow members of the B Corporation Community participated as a team and successfully completed the West Coast ride and wrote about their experience here: ‘B The Change: The Blog

Step Up Women’s Network

Step-Up-Womens

A Truly Inspiring Day

This year, Dogeared made Step Up Women’s Network our non-profit partner…donating time and funds to incredible young girls and women. Step Up Women’s Network is a truly inspiring organization, fulfilling underserved girls’ in local communities to reach their full potential through education, mentoring and confidence building. Each year, SUWN hosts their annual Inspiration Awards Event at The Beverly HIlton Hotel here in Los Angeles. The Dogeared team was ecstatic to be invited to celebrate the successes of the graduating class of 2013 and honorees.

Our team was able to donate jewelry for the silent auction and to the honorary girls from the class of 2013 – (and not to mention, 100% graduation rate and EVERY one of them accepted into college!). Celebrity honorees at the event included Julie Bowen, of ‘Modern Family’ and fashion designer, Trina Turk and Nina Jacobson, producer of “The Hunger Games.”

The day was filled with inspiring, moving and impressive stories of courage and fortitude from the girls of the organization and the hardships they endured to get to where they are now. We were so happy to be a part of these young women’s lives and watch their success flourish! Check out some of their encouraging stories here- http://youtu.be/VmZ2tijiV9c

Step Up Women’s Network, its mentors and sponsors enable progress and education for these young women through after school programs and mentorship opportunities to ensure a brighter future for all. With over 900 attendees at the event, Step Up was able to raise over $400,000 to help the next wave of these amazing young women. For more information on Step Up Women’s Network, visit: www.suwn.org
