One Hour At A Time

head-image

Dogeared is building a better world… one hour at a time! As a certified B-Corp, giving back and brining people together is part of what we do. In 2014, the Dogeared team logged in 897 volunteer hours at some of our favorite organizations:

Step Up: Inspiring women to inspire girls! Step up believes all girls should have the opportunity to fulfill their potential.

Dogeared donated a portion of proceeds from the Three Wishes Collection to the scholarship funds of three high school seniors, helping them achieve their dreams.

Volunteers from our team spent a day at Scripps College with 40 Step Up girls at their annual College Connections Conference. Each of the girls was paired with a mentor to tour the school, ask questions & get the inside scoop on college life. Dogeared’s Creative Director, Mimi Kim-Ison, gave the keynote speech – encouraging the room to Dare To… and they all left with Dogeared necklaces!

In addition, Dogeared funds the school’s Kamir (language) teacher for the school year.

Travel Diaries: Cambodia

Merlin Clarke, Owner and Head of Happenings at Dogeared, and his daughter, Grace, recently took a give-back trip to Cambodia to spend time at Hope for Justice, an organization dedicated to ending human trafficking and slavery among young women around the world.

Sightseeing near the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh.

IMG_0855  IMG_0828

Their journey began before this trip was even planned—70% of Dogeared employees are currently supporting Hope for Justice by personally providing monthly donations that are matched by Dogeared. This sponsorship has completely funded 2 of the newest girls to the program and provides them full access to therapy, education, medical care and more.

Our travel diary: My daughter had the week off from school and wanted to go somewhere and do something good. It makes me proud as a father that she wants to do more. As part of our commitment as a certified B-Corporation and the community at large, Dogeared employees participate in charitable services through investment and volunteer work. Hope for Justice is one of those foundations, and I was compelled to visit them and see the amazing things that they’re doing for these young women.

IMG_8344

Working directly with the girls was incredibly rewarding, but also the most difficult part of our trip. Our goal was to share some love, joy, fun and build connections with these inspiring young women.

IMG_7827

Merlin was moved when one of the girls talked about their visit:

“This week was very special to me.  I wish we could do this all the time with different projects. It would be so fun!  My favorite thing this week was drawing and painting pictures.  I painted birds and a house… the house I will live in one day.  It’s so pretty!”

IMG_8016

Despite the language barrier, it really felt like we were able to communicate with the girls on an emotional level . We also had the opportunity to visit a non-profit sustainable jewelry company, Penh Lenh (meaning ‘whole and complete’). The company works with the girls as therapy to provide a valuable skill they can take out into the world. There’s so much opportunity for Dogeared to train, help and mentor this business  as we continue our partnership with Hope for Justice. It’s such a natural fit for us and we’re excited for what’s to come.

IMG_7988_2

After returning, Merlin and Dogeared were compelled to do even more. Dogeared has decided to sponsor the school’s Kamir (language) teacher for an entire year so that he can continue working with the girls on communication skills. We always believe good things happen when people are able to be courageous and help one another.

Bright Pink

EPG_2908

This year, Dogeared is honored to support Bright Pink, the only national non-profit focused on prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer in young women. Focused on education and support programs, Bright Pink has made a commitment to enlightening and empowering young women to be proactive with their breast and ovarian health. We love their focus on the power of connection; the Bright Pink community provides trusted and unconditional support to young women taking on a proactive, preventative lifestyle while also providing the same to those in high risk situations.

Knowledge Is Power

Bright Pink provides prevention methods through easy-to-access educational workshops, like the 20-minute Brighten Up Your Community workshop lead by a certified Bright Pink Education Ambassador. Striving to continuously educate the youngest generation of women, Bright Pink connects generations of women through support programs such as Pink Pal and Experiential Outreach.

Awareness To Action

Knowledge is a powerful tool, but it doesn’t stop there. We really love that Bright Pink is not just about being aware, it’s about being bold and taking action! The Bright Pink community provides a checklist of proactive steps, including risk reduction, early detection and breast health reminders – sign up and you’ll receive a monthly text reminder to remember to be breast self-aware.

Bright Pink + Dogeared

Dogeared will donate 5% of every I AM Brave purchase between October 1-31, 2014 to Bright Pink. Proceeds will benefit education and support programs.

Do Good Bus

IMG_4822

So imagine boarding a big yellow school bus with 30 of your coworkers knowing you’re headed to a volunteer day but have no idea where! That’s one of the many reasons why we love working with the Do Good Bus. They provide a fun and exciting way to bring communities together to give back.

“At Dogeared, we feel the responsibility to do good and give back is just as important for our business as it is on a personal level. Working with the Do Good Bus allows us to give something back as a team to our local communities, while honoring our commitment to social and environmental change. Our team is able to bond and connect, have fun and grow and learn on new levels while contributing to the greater good.”  – Merlin Clarke, Dogeared Co-Founder

We were dropped off at the Best Friends Animal Society in Mission Hills. An incredible No Kill facility and non-profit that operates the nation’s largest sanctuary for homeless animals and provides adoption, spay/neuter and educational programs. We spent the day lending lots of helping hands wherever needed. It was a great day using business as a force for good!

USA Love

header

As we head into the 4th of July weekend, we’re feeling excitement, patriotism and we’re ready to celebrate! We’ve been rooting on Team USA in the World Cup and we’re definitely feeling the USA love around Dogeared these days. But, it’s YOUR love has kept our dreams alive! Because of you, our commitment as a certified B Corporation to create a beautiful community and meaningful handcrafted designs in the USA has never been stronger.

IMG_2641

Handcrafted in the USA

Since our founding in 1991, 100% of our employees and operations are in the USA! We don’t outsource labor or materials. Our headquarters in Culver City, CA currently consists of two large buildings where we handcraft all of our products. That means that everything from design and production, to quality control and packaging, marketing and sales, shipping and customer service… happen here! Having the start-to-finish process in-house allows us to closely monitor daily operations and be able to instantly improve upon both the quality of our products, and the experience for our customers.

IMG_0122 IMG_3284 IMG_0110

Recycled Materials & Local Vendors

Being a part of the B Corp community, we’ve made a pledge to take responsible and meaningful action to be kind to our planet! We’re really into recycling, (did you know we have a garden club?!) and we try to use recycled components and materials whenever possible with our jewelry. 75% of our revenue is generated from products made with recycled materials. Dogeared also sources the majority of our products locally from vendors around Los Angeles, many of whom we’ve known for 10+ years and consider family.

IMG_3562 IMG_3273

Locally Employed & Giving Back

Since the beginning, Dogeared has been a values-driven corporation committed to giving back to the community through partnerships with several nonprofit organizations. Dogeared employees are given 16 volunteer hours per year to give back. We actually have really fun volunteer days, where we head into local communities to offer helping hands. As a B Corp, Dogeared is committed to creating social and environmental change by using business as a force for good. We employ locally to ensure an investment back into the local economy, and we know that it inherently fosters stronger community involvement. Each one of us is excited every time we go into the neighborhoods where we live and are able to give something back.

We love our Dogeared customers and it’s your ongoing support that allows us to continue on our path to make good things happen.

3 Girls. 3 Wishes.

header

At Dogeared, a large part of our corporate culture is shaped by supporting our community and giving back – through volunteering, partnerships and financial support. For the past two years, Dogeared has enjoyed an incredible partnership with Step Up, a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to inspiring girls to fulfill their potential. Step Up offers after-school and weekend programs to empower teen girls from under-resourced communities to be confident, college-bound and career-ready. Many of these teens face challenging life circumstances and Step Up ensures that they stay in school, helping guide their futures to break the cycle of poverty frequently helping them be the first in their family to attend college. Step Up recruits an extensive network of professional women to invest in the future success of these girls through mentorship and financial support. Step Up projects that for a fifth straight school year, 100% of seniors will graduate high school and be accepted to college!

Help Dogeared support 3 of these amazing young women from Step Up as they prepare to take their next big step: college! $7 from each NEW Three Wishes purchase goes directly into scholarship funds through Step Up to support a beautiful cause: providing essential scholarships to these deserving young women determined to make their dreams come true. We sat down with the bubbling young ladies to chat life, school, the future and of course, Step Up. Meet Elizabeth, Mydrea & Wendy!

Inspiration Awards 2014

header

Dogeared was so honored to once again be a sponsor at the 11th Annual Inspiration Awards hosted by Step Up Women’s Network. The day brought together a room of nearly 900 amazing women to celebrate inspiring young girls who have worked so hard to overcome, grow and step into a new chapter in their life. Their stories are heartfelt, their obstacles and challenges monumental and their success inspiring. These young women provide so much to all of us who have had the honor to see them grow and to share in their journey. Dogeared is so grateful to partner with Step Up and help foster their vision… inspiring women to inspire girls.

It was exciting to see so many noteworthy attendees dripping in Dogeared walking the red carpet on Friday!

Elephants In My Backyard

photo

Dogeared was proud to be a corporate sponsor of the first annual Elephants In My Backyard cocktail reception benefiting orphaned elephants through the U.S. Friends of David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Born from one family’s passion for Kenya and its wilderness, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is today the most successful orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world and one of the pioneering conservation organisations for wildlife and habitat protection in East Africa.

The event was hosted at the W Hotel in Hollywood and included a fun night of raffles, prize giveaways and thousands of dollars raised for the charity. To date the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has successfully hand-raised over 150 orphaned infant elephants in East Africa. Dogeared is thrilled to have had the opportunity to contribute to such a great cause.

Meet the elephants, see their precious photos and stay connected on Facebook!
